Self-Study Course Retired

3 min read

On December 19, 2025, after just over 10 years, I retired the self-study video course called “The World’s Best Introduction to Test-Driven Development: Level 1”.

This self-study video course introduced participants to TDD in order for them to begin practising the related techniques on real programming tasks in their day job. It was a snapshot of my 3-day in-person training course as it was during the period around 2013-2015. Hundreds of participants purchased this course.

Why Did You Retire It?

The costs associated with distributing the course had become too high to justify paying. The course platform raised its prices to reflect adding features that I wasn’t using. Sales declined. It simply didn’t make sense any more to continue the course in its current form.

At the same time, the course videos were really showing their age. I recorded the earliest ones in 2013 and the rest in 2015. I don’t like the production quality any longer. I don’t agree with some of my own comments any longer. The general content of the course remains as relevant as ever, but I’ve made significant changes in my tone as well as my teaching style since then.

These two factors explain why the course needed to leave its platform and why I haven’t merely republished it elsewhere.

What About My Purchase?

If you purchased this course, then you were notified a few times over the span of two months before the course was retired. It was part of my philosophy from the beginning to make the videos downloadable, so that participants could keep a copy for themselves if they preferred. I especially always wanted folks to have the option to watch the videos offline if that was better for them.

When I published this course in 2015, I promised purchasers that they would receive all future versions of the course. If I publish a new version of this course, then I will give the original purchasers an opportunity to join the course at no additional cost.

What Happens Now?

Once the self-study course was taken offline, I published this site. You can find alternative offerings of this course, in case you’d like to run it at your organization. I am also planning to launch the Evolutionary Design Studio in 2026 that would give individuals an opportunity to continue learning and practising with my advice and guidance.

Will This Course Ever Return?

Never say never! Even so, as of the day I write this, I have no specific, concrete plans for producing another self-study video version of this course. Meantime, I continue to write, produce the occasional video, speak at conferences, and offer a shoulder to cry on to technical leaders who are trying to guide their organization towards more-effective software development practices.
